Two men from Marengo and Cardington were arrested after deputies responded to a reported garage break-in on Kingston-Adelphi Road, according to Sheriff Matthew O. Hafey.
PICKAWAY COUNTY, Ohio — Two men have been arrested and charged after an early morning break-in at a Pickaway County home, authorities said.
According to Pickaway County Sheriff Matthew O. Hafey, deputies responded around 6:26 a.m. on Oct. 15 to a report from a homeowner on Kingston-Adelphi Road who said someone had broken into their garage and was attempting to access a safe.
While deputies were on their way, the homeowner reported that one of the suspects fled through a back door. When deputies and detectives arrived, they reviewed trail camera footage and gathered descriptions of the suspects, Hafey said.
Investigators learned that one of the men had entered a vacant residence on the property before breaking a basement window and escaping. While clearing a semi-trailer nearby, deputies located a man identified as Justin K. Counts, 34, of Marengo, who matched one of the suspects seen on camera. Counts was taken into custody.
A short time later, deputies located another man walking nearby who fit the description of the second suspect. That man, Kevin Fields, 38, of Cardington, was also arrested, according to the sheriff’s office.
Both men were booked into the Pickaway County Jail and charged with breaking and entering (fifth-degree felony), theft (fifth-degree felony), and safecracking (fourth-degree felony). They are scheduled to be arraigned Thursday morning in Circleville Municipal Court.
Sheriff Hafey said detectives later identified a third suspect and recovered all stolen property, which has since been returned to the homeowner.
The Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate.
